TROY, Ala. – Former Troy women's golfer Fátima Fernández Cano continues to inch her way closer to the LPGA Tour as she sits in first place in the Symetra Tour's Volvik Race for the Card rankings following seven events.
Cano has four top six finishes this year after tying for third at the Symetra Classic at LPGA International this past weekend. The performance pushed her yearly earnings to $44,187 which bumped her two spots up the leaderboard into the top position. Cano picked up her first professional win in August with a 12-under performance at the IOA Championship.
"I'm thrilled to be leading the rankings now with three tournaments to go. It really feels like the hard work is paying off and I'm looking forward to the final sprint of the season," Cano told SymetraTour.com. "My goal this year is to finish the season top five and play in the U.S. Women's Open in December, as well as, gaining membership into the LPGA, so I will make sure that I continue to work hard to maintain this No. 1 spot."
Cano's goal to reach the LPGA Tour and play in the 2020 US Women's Open is contingent on her finishing in the top five in the Volvik Race for the Card – she has a $12,553 advantage over Lucy Li, who currently occupies the sixth spot in the rankings, with just three tournaments left to play.
The Tour heads to the Mission Inn Resort and Club Championship in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., next week, before moving to North Carolina for the Carolina Golf Classic (Oct. 28-31) at Pinehurst No. 9 and the Symetra Tour Championship (Nov. 3-6) in Davidson, N.C.
