STATESBORO, Ga. – Troy women's basketball got back into the win column on Saturday with a victory at Georgia Southern Saturday night. The Trojans used a strong defensive effort in the second-quarter, holding the Eagles scoreless for nearly nine minutes on their way to a 79-69 victory.
On Saturday Troy shot 36 percent from the field on 31-of-87 shooting while Georgia Southern shot 32 percent on 21-of-66 shooting. From the foul line Troy shot below their season average, going 13-of-16 while GS went 24-for-30. On the glass the Troy had the edge with 59 boards, 30 of which were on the offensive glass, to Georgia Southerns 51 rebounds.
Japonica James led the way for Troy with a team-high 19 points while going a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. She also added five boards and four steals. James has reached double-digit points in three of the last four games. Tyasia Moore finished second on the team in scoring with 12-points and nine rebounds while Jasmine Robinson added 10 points, her fifth straight game reaching double-digits. Alexus Dye posted a game-high 13 rebounds, eight on the offensive glass, and turned it into seven points.
Heading into the second-quarter the Trojans trailed the Eagles 18-19, but that would be the last time Troy trailed in the contest. In the second Troy locked down on the defensive end and allowed their defense to create offense. Troy forced four steals while causing six total turnovers which lead to 15 points of turnovers for the half. For nearly nine minutes Troy held Georgia Southern scoreless while scoring 22 straight points. After allowing just three total points to the Eagles, Troy went into the locker room with a comfortable 40-22 lead. They maintained that lead throughout the second half before closing out the game with a 10-point advantage.
Records
Troy: 13-3 (4-1 SBC)
Georgia Southern: 5-11 (2-3 SBC)
Quoting Coach Rigby
On holding GS scoreless for nine minutes in the 2nd
"I really think part of it on the defensive end was that we stopped giving them second chance shots, they had seven offensive rebounds in the first-quarter and then we started doing our jobs on the boards and didn't allow those second shots. Neither team was shooting that outstanding of a percentage so rebounding was really important tonight."
On James' strong performance for a second-straight game
"When Japonica is playing with energy she is really hard to stop. Just like last game, a lot of the shots she scores on are not things we call for her, but on shots that she creates for herself because of her athleticism."
