Trojans See Four-Match Unbeaten Streak Snapped at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Troy Trojans women's soccer program dropped a tight 2-1 contest Sunday afternoon to Coastal Carolina at Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium.

The loss snapped Troy's (5-2-3) four-match unbeaten streak. In defeat, senior Haleigh Mercer made three saves.Â

Coastal Carolina (3-5-1) struck first in the match, on a penalty kick that was awarded when the Trojans were whistled for a hand-ball in the 18-yard box.

Just one minute and 26 seconds later, sophomore Kendra Cashion made a beautiful run toward the Chanticleers net and ripped a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the net that tied the match at one.

Troy and Coastal battled deep into the second-half, but a Gabby Smychynsky's 79th minute header ultimately was the difference in the match.

The Trojans return to action Friday evening for a home matchup against Georgia State. Kickoff from Troy Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m.
NOTEWORTHY:
• Troy saw its second four-match unbeaten streak of the season snapped. The Trojans previously had a five-match unbeaten streak from Aug. 24- Sept. 5.
• The Trojans allowed just the fourth second-half goal of the season. The previous three times Troy allowed a second half goal they responded with a goal.
• Troy has scored at least one goal in four consecutive matches and has scored in eight of the 10 matches this season. Â
• Today's strike was the Trojans 19th of the season. Troy scored just 18 times in 20 matches a season ago.
• Troy falls to 0-4 all-time against Coastal Carolina.
• Cashion's goal was her second of the season. The sophomore needs just one more goal to match her output from a season ago.
• Mercer's final save today was her 50th save of the season.
• The goalie allowed more than one goal for just the third time in 10 matches.
