Competing in the tournament for Troy will be Pelayo Antuna, Manuel Bernard, Antonio Selma, Andy Romero and Trey Whittaker. This will be the fifth consecutive year that the Trojan's have traveled to Macon to compete in the Mercer Classic.
Joining Troy in Mercer will be Alabama State, Clemson, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Stetson, UNC-Wilmington, North Florida and Winthrop.
This will be the first tournament action of the fall for all five Trojans competing. Antuna highlights the group after coming off an impressive 2019 spring season that saw the junior go 15-3 overall in singles, including an impressive 11-3 mark at the No. 1 spot. Antuna's .833 singles winning percentage last season led the Sun Belt Conference.
Bernard is coming off a solid freshman campaign after winning 11 matches, including going undefeated at both No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Selma and Romero both enter their junior seasons looking to make a mark as upperclassmen. Selma earned 10 singles wins last year while Romero picked up two, including four in doubles. Whittaker, a sophomore, competed at the Mercer Classic last season and picked up a first-round victory in doubles.
Coach Vargas on this Weekends Tournament
"We are really excited about this weekend. There are going to be a lot of top teams and the quality of opponents is going to be high and that's what we want, especially before going to the ITA All-American Championship. But this is what we want. We want to make the players better and put them in situations where they are going to play the best in the nation."
