TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team opens its 2019-20 campaign this weekend with a three-day trip to Mobile, Alabama for the USA Intercollegiate hosted by South Alabama at the Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Golf Course. Teams will play 18 holes on Saturday thru Monday.
"We're going to find out a lot about our young players and see if we're where we think we are as a team," third-year head coach Randy Keck said. "We have a good squad and feel like we should win if we play like we're capable of playing."
Sophomore Nicole Lorup leads the charge for the Trojans after earning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors last season. She led Troy with a 74.17 stroke average over 29 rounds in her rookie campaign. Her average was the fifth best in the Sun Belt last season, fourth lowest in school history and the lowest by a freshman in school history.
Junior Judith Castro is the only other returning player in the lineup for Keck. She posted a 77.26 stroke average last season, her first as a Trojan, and was Troy's third-best player in the spring with a 75.45 average.
Tulsa transfer ShaeLee Scarberry will make her Troy debut after an eventful summer where she qualified for the match play portion of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and won the Women's Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship.
Freshmen Elisabeth Preus and Ainsley Cowart will also make their debuts for the Trojans this weekend. Preus led Auburn High School to its second straight state title last spring and won the 7A individual championship, while Cowart tied for seventh at the Georgia 4A state tournament.
The Trojans will also have three individuals competing in the tournament with sophomore Anna Claire Little joined by freshman Sarah Johnson and Brooklyn Bostick.
"We want our identity to be tough," Keck said. "I want to see us battle through bad shots, battle through bad holes and come back to shoot some really good scores. We have to make sure we don't let rounds get away from us because of our attitude."
