JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Troy (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) capped off its unbeaten day at the Jax State Invitational with a 3-1 win over Jacksonville State (0-2, 0-0 OVC). This marks the Trojans' first 2-0 start since 2014.
Offensively, the Troy was led by Cheyenne Hayes who hit home 21 attacks, while freshman Julia Brooks added 15 of her own.
Amara Anderson and Lacey Jeffcoat registered 10 digs each for the Trojans. Anderson tallied 52 assists to her impressive stat line as well.
"I was really proud of our willingness to embrace pressure tonight," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We had great performances from Cheyenne and Amara, and Julia brought tremendous energy."
How It Happened
Troy came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, jumping out to a quick 10-4 lead as freshman led the way early for the Trojans. Julia Brooks recorded four kills in the opening set, while Ashley Guenveur added three.
The Gamecocks would rally, however, to take the first set, 25-23.
The Trojans fell into an early hole in set two, but rallied to take the second stanza, 28-26. Brooks continued to pace Troy on offense, adding six more kills two her total in the second set.
Troy jumped out to a 16-6 lead in set three and never looked back. The Trojans took a 2-1 match lead after winning the third set, 25-19. Avery Cason made her presence felt in the third set, blocking three Jacksonville State attacks at the net.
Jacksonville State pulled out to an early lead in the fourth set, but the Trojans' were gritty once again when it counted. A brilliant serve from Natalie Hummel helped propel Troy to a 25-23 win in set four.
"Natalie's serve in the fourth set was about as gritty as it gets," Lauer said. "We are not backing down late in sets. We are pressing into those situations and taking the risks necessary to win."
