TROY, Alabama – Troy clears one more hurdle this week before the official return of football when players report back to campus for fall camp on Thursday and hit the practice field on Friday.
Â
"Our guys at Troy are in a great spot," head coach Chip Lindsey said last week at Sun Belt Media Day. "They're good kids, good people. They do what we ask them to do, which is really exciting, and therefore I think we're in a good spot to get ready for 2019."
Â
Troy returns seven full time starters plus six other players who started a game last season on the offensive side of the ball, while the Trojan defense welcomes back five full time starters and three others who earned a start.
Â
"Good football still wins," Lindsey said. "If you don't turn the ball over, you stop the run on defense, don't give up explosive plays and create explosive plays, you're going to have a chance to win no matter where you are."
Â
The Trojans enter the 2019 season with the most wins among teams in the Group of Five over the past three seasons with 31 victories and three straight 10-win seasons. Additionally, the Trojans have won their bowl game in each of the last three seasons.Â
Â
Senior quarterback Kaleb Barker is back to lead the Trojans after missing the second half of the 2018 season due to a knee injury. Barker finished last season with the highest completion percentage (73.0) in school history, a number which would have ranked second nationally if he qualified.
Â
Complimenting Barker and the passing game will be Preseason Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year in senior running back B.J. Smith who rushed for nearly 1,200 yards last season to go along with 13 touchdowns. Smith will run behind an offensive line with a combined 91 starts among the projected starting five including four returning full-time starters.
Â
The Trojans must replace four senior leaders along the defensive front and in the secondary, but Troy returns freshman All-American Carlton Martial at linebacker and a trio of All-Sun Belt performers in Marcus Webb, Melvin Tyus and Jarvis Hayes.
Â
"Defensively we'll be very similar (to last year)," Lindsey said. "I think it was key hiring Brandon Hall as our defensive coordinator, he's a guy that was part of that defensive success last year. He's able to mesh some of his ideas with what they've done and had success with in the past. All in all, I think it'll be a similar look, but at the same time I think that's yet to be determined until we get going."
Troy opens the 2019 season on Aug. 31 against Campbell at The Vet; tickets are available by visiting TroyTrojans.com/tickets.
