TROY, Alabama – The Troy Athletics Department in collaboration with South Alabama Athletics and the Alabama Department of Transportation announced Monday that "Drive Safe Alabama" will be the presenting sponsor for the annual "Battle for the Belt" football game between the two schools.
The Student Government Associations for both institutions worked together to create the "Belt" in 2015 to be awarded to the winner of the annual football game between the Trojans and Jaguars. Since its inception, the road team has claimed the prize each time after Troy earned a 38-17 victory in Mobile last October.
"The 'Battle for the Belt' sponsorship provides ALDOT a unique opportunity to reach a large part of Alabama's population with the Drive Safe Alabama campaign," Allison Green, Alabama Department of Transportation Communication Specialist and Drive Safe Alabama Coordinator said. "We're pleased to partner with Troy University and the University of South Alabama to spread the message that everyone plays a role in improving the safety culture on Alabama roadways. When fans think about the 'Battle for the Belt' between Troy and South Alabama, we want them to also think about another belt – the seat belt that can save lives."
This fall, the "Battle for the Belt" will take place in Troy on Wednesday, Oct. 16, with the match-up scheduled to be televised nationally on ESPN2.
Troy is coming off its third straight 10-win season, and the Trojans' 31 wins since 2016 are the most among Group of Five conference schools. The Trojans were picked to finish second in the Sun Belt East Division and running back B.J. Smith was the preseason selection for Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year.
Troy's 2019 home slate features games against South Alabama, App State, Southern Miss, Georgia Southern, Arkansas State and Campbell. Season ticket packages start as low as $60 for general admission seating and $100 for reserved seats, and tickets can be purchased or renewed by calling 877-878-WINS or by visiting TroyTrojans.com/tickets.
