B.J. Smith Named to Doak Walker Award Watch List

TROY, Alabama – Troy senior running back B.J. Smith has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Wednesday. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation's top running back. This comes one day after Smith was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List.

The award, which will name its 30th recipient in 2019, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.

Smith, a native of Millbrook, Ala., rushed for 1,186 yards last season which led the Sun Belt over the 12 regular season games and ranked second, by one yard, for the entire season. Smith's 13 rushing touchdowns were the sixth most in a season in Troy history and were the most among running backs in the league.

The All-Sun Belt First Team selection set a school record after rushing for more than 100 yards in five straight games as he averaged 141.3 yards per game during the month of October; the fifth most in the country. Smith enters the 2019 season on pace to crack the career top five for rushing yards and touchdowns.

Smith finished the season averaging 91.23 yards per game, which ranked him 34th nationally in the category. He posted a season-high 170 yards on just 22 carries in Troy's victory at South Alabama in the "Battle for the Belt" and scored twice in Troy's win at Nebraska.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced on November 20. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.

The recipient of the 2019 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12 on ESPN.
