TROY, Alabama – Tyler Gentry drove in four runs, including a back-breaking three-run home run, to lift Alabama past Troy, 7-3, Wednesday night in non-conference action at Riddle-Pace Field in front of 3,210 fans – the fourth-largest crowd in stadium history.
Troy had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth after Connor Shamblin and Jeremy Randolph walked the bases loaded around a one-out strikeout. However, Randolph struck out the next two Trojans to record his eighth save of the season.
Alabama (28-21) jumped in front, 5-3, in the top of the fifth inning on Gentry's 11th home run of the season. The Crimson Tide added two more runs in the seventh inning and the final five pitchers out of the Bama bullpen held the Trojans (25-24) scoreless.
The Trojans opened the home half of the first inning with four straight singles including run-scoring pokes by Rigsby Mosley and Chase Smartt. Alabama tied the game in the top of the fourth on a sac fly by Joe Breaux but Hunter Mercer put Troy back in front in the bottom of the frame on a grounder to third following Logan Cerny's fourth triple of the season.
Smartt, the reigning National Hitter of the Week, paced the Trojans with a 2-for-4 night at the plate while Reed Smith and Dalton Sinquefield also added a pair of hits. Tyler Ras, who started on the mound for Alabama, pounded out four hits to lead the Tide.
Casey Cobb (1-1) picked up the win for Alabama after allowing a run on two hits over two innings out of the bullpen. Grant Stewart (2-2) struggled as the first man out of the pen for Troy allowing three runs on a pair of hits and a walk in just a third of an inning and took the loss.
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Mark Smartt
"The three-run homer in the fifth changed the game. For some reason, we didn't respond to that. Our at-bats weren't very good, and we didn't defend very well the last five innings. Our team kind of got knocked off the mark a little bit and give them (Alabama) credit. We scored, and they answered with the big three-run inning."
