TROY, Alabama – Troy split a makeshift doubleheader Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field winning 5-4 in the resumption of Saturday's suspended game before Georgia Southern salvaged a game in the series with an 11-3 win in the regularly scheduled game. It is Troy's fifth Sun Belt series win in the last six weekends.
Drew Frederic hit a pair of home runs on Sunday including the game-winner for Troy (25-23, 12-12) in the bottom of the seventh inning of the suspended game. The Eagles (27-21, 13-11) tied the game with two runs in the top of the frame after the resumption of play before Frederic hit the second pitch of the home half of the frame out of the park.
Chase Smartt led the Trojans in the suspended game going 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs to keep up his torrid pace at the plate. He added another double and two more hits in the second game of the day to finish the series 9-for-13 with four doubles, a home run and five RBIs. The first five hitters in the Troy lineup finished the suspended game 11-for-22.
Rush Hixon tossed two clean innings with a pair of strikeouts to record his fifth save of the season after Lance Johnson (3-1) picked up the win. Levi Thomas was solid in the start for the Trojans as he allowed just two runs – one earned – on four hits in six innings of work.
Mason McWhorter hit three home runs to pace a 17-hit attack by the Eagles in the second game of the day. The contest was sitting on McWhorter's solo homer in the first until he hit a 2-run blast in the fifth which started a spurt of five straight innings with runs for Georgia Southern. Tyler Owens (7-1) tossed eight strong innings allowing just one run on seven hits for the Eagles.
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Mark Smartt
"Great series win for our team, no question. We played really well in games one and two, and I thought (Georgia Southern) played exceptional in game three. I wasn't displeased by anything, other than the score was lopsided, but they played really well – give them credit. We swung the bats, we pitched well and we defended well when we had to – great to get a series win at home. That's five of the last six series that we've won, so we're moving in a good direction. We're in the fight, there are six games left and a lot at stake."
