Smartt, Gill Power Troy Past Georgia Southern in Series Opener

TROY, Alabama – Chase Smartt pounded out four hits – three for extra bases – and Cory Gill turned in seven solid innings on the mound as Troy defeated Georgia Southern, 10-3, Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field in a key Sun Belt East Division contest. The Troy win snapped a six-game winning streak in series openers by Georgia Southern.
Troy (24-22, 11-11 Sun Belt), which moved to within a game of first place in the division, hit five home runs and finished with 10 extra-base hits. This coming after the Trojans hit six home runs and 11 extra-base hits in a mid-week win over Alabama State on Tuesday.
Smartt finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs after he doubled in his first two at-bats and started the Trojans' four-run sixth with his fifth home run in the last nine games. Over that nine-game stretch, Smartt is batting .432 (16-for-37) with seven doubles, 15 RBIs and the five home runs.
The game was shaping up to be a battle between two of the top pitchers in the league as the Trojans carried a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning. Georgia Southern (26-20, 12-10) took a 3-2 advantage in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run homer from Austin Thompson.
Smartt led off the home half of the frame with his towering shot to left and three batters later Manning Early and Cole Prestegard went back-to-back off Seth Shuman who had allowed just three runs over his previous five outings. Troy tagged Shuman (6-5) for six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Gill (6-2) allowed just three runs and six hits over his seven innings of work as he struck out six and walked just one. Lance Johnson tossed the final two innings of the game allowing just a pair of hits.
Logan Cenry added a triple and a home run for Troy while Dalton Sinquefield doubled and homered from his new home in the leadoff spot.

"These kids are confident," Smartt said. "You can see it when they are going to the plate. When a couple guys start hitting and then the next guy and then all of sudden it spreads itself around the ball club. It wasn't too long ago that we were struggling to score runs and now it looks like everybody can't wait to get to home plate. We can you score, and you know you can score, it really takes a lot of pressure off your team.'

Troy took control of the game with three home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with blasts from Chase Smartt, Manning Early and Cole Prestegard. It marked the first time since 2015 against Kennesaw State that the Trojans hit three homers in an inning.

• Playing in his 207thcareer game for the Trojans, Chase Smartt moved into a tie for 10thplace all time in school history with his 40thcareer double. In two games this week, Smartt is 7-for-11 with four doubles, three home runs and seven RBIs.
• After hitting five home runs on Friday, Troy has now hit 25 home runs in its last 14 games. Prior to this current hot streak, the Trojans had hit just 26 home runs in its previous 32 games.
• Since moving to the starting rotation, Cory Gill is 6-1 with a 3.53 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 43.1 innings of work.
• Dalton Sinquefield went 2-for-5 with a double and a home run in the opener, he now has multiple hits in 14 of Troy's 22 Sun Belt Conference games this season.
