Highlights
Troy, Ala. – Troy men's basketball has received a signed National Letter of Intent from high school senior Jakevan Leftridge as announced by first-year head coach Scott Cross on Tuesday morning.Â
Â
Leftridge comes from Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas, Texas and is the first high school signee in the Scott Cross era at Troy.
Â
"We are extremely excited about the addition of Jakevan Leftridge to our basketball team," Cross said. "He is a 6-foot-6, long, athletic wing that can defend and score at all three levels. His length helps him get deflections on defense, but his passing ability is probably the thing that impresses me the most about him. He is a selfless basketball player that makes the right play almost every time."Â
Â
The 6-foot-6, 170-pound wing posted a stellar senior season at Wilmer-Hutchins as he finished the year averaging 18.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. Leftridge helped Wilmer-Hutchins finish the season with a 31-4 overall record and a perfect 12-0 in conference play.Â
Â
At the end of the season, Leftridge was named the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 4A Player of the Year and is ranked as the 37th best player in Texas by Mie Kunstadt of Texas Basketball Review.Â
Â
Leftridge joins Nick Stampley in the 2019-20 signing class for Troy, as Stampley signed his National Letter of Intent to join the Trojans on April 19.Â
Â
QUOTABLES
"Jakevan's full abilities have yet to be tapped into," head coach TJ Billups from Wilmer-Hutchins said. "Once he gets used to the speed, quickness and physicality of play on the collegiate level, he will definitely become a hard player to guard."
Â
"Troy got a great one with Jakevan," coach Tony Johnson of Leftridge's AAU team (Dallas Mustangs). "He is going to be a great player in the Sun Belt Conference as he can play above the rim, drive it, shoot it and is a good passer. He is also a long defender that can be very disruptive to offenses. However, the best thing about Jakevan is that he is an even better person than he is a player."
