TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's golf team heads to a familiar sight this week as the Trojans are at the Raven Golf Course in Sandestin for the Sun Belt Conference Championship. Stroke play runs Sunday thru Tuesday before the top four teams battle it out in match play on Wednesday. The entire tournament will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
"Our expectation is to play hard, loose and free," head coach Bart Barnes said. "The underdog role is very real for us this year and hopefully that puts us in a position to make a run. The mental side of golf can weigh on you and make you tight. We're going to go out and play freely and aggressively."
Barnes will turn to a relatively young lineup for the Sun Belt Championship with one senior and the rest underclassmen. Dean Martin, who ranks second on the team with a 2.15 score vs. par, is the lone upperclassmen in the lineup. Martin is the only Trojan to have each of his rounds count towards the team card this year.
The remainder of the lineup will feature a pair of sophomores in Ike Alexander and Connor Futrell and two freshmen in Brent Hamm and Will McFadden.
Futrell leads Troy in stroke average (73.74), score vs. par (1.87), top-25 finishes (5) and rounds under par (6). Alexander will be making just his fourth appearance of the season but has been strong in his other three outings with a 75.00 overall average including a 3-over 219 in his lone spring appearance at the UNA Spring Classic.
Hamm paced the Trojans at the Shoal Creek Invitational last week and ranks fourth on the team with a 3.07 score vs. par, while McFadden has the ability to go low each time he steps on the course with three rounds under par this year.
This marks the fifth straight year that the Sun Belt Championship has been held at The Raven, and the Trojans have had mixed success winning the 2016 title and making match play in 2017.
"We've been there enough to know where the hot spots are on the course," Barnes said. "We also know where it's not too bad to take a bogey and just limit the damage."
