TROY, Alabama – It's hard to believe but Troy's spring football practice is nearing its midpoint with the Trojans wrapping their seventh of 15 sessions Tuesday afternoon. The final practice will take place on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. in The Vet in the form of T-Day.
"We've made a lot of progress and the whole emphasis has been learning the base offense, defense and special teams," first-year head coach Chip Lindsey said. "Now, we're starting to get into some situational football – third downs, red zone, two-minute – all of the things that go along with that."
With practices open to the public, it doesn't take long for anyone observing the high-tempo and efficient practice sessions to see what the makeup of this squad is about.
"Our effort has been outstanding every practice," Lindsey said. "I haven't walked off that practice field one time disappointed in our effort or enthusiasm to practice."
Following Tuesday's practice, Lindsey and his staff have seven tradition practice days remaining in the spring to establish a base layer heading into summer workouts and eventually fall camp.
"At the end of spring, we want to have a really good idea who the playmakers are on both sides of the ball and who can play for us," Lindsey said. "I want to leave spring ball with a really good idea of who we are."
Student Appreciation: As has become tradition at Troy during the spring, the Trojans will open the gates of The Vet for the annual Student Appreciation Practice on Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Troy Athletics will have free pizza for the first 300 students in attendance and a plethora of prizes will be awarded throughout the afternoon – Yeti Cooler, sideline passes for T-Day, movie tickets, Troy football swag, Troy earbuds, Chip Lindsey autographed football and more.
"We want to stay connected to everyone on campus and that's one of the things we've really emphasized with our players," Lindsey said. "I want our players to have a great experience while they are here at Troy and part of that is interacting with our other students on campus.
"Thursday is a great opportunity for us to practice with some new eyes watching and give our students a chance to whet their appetites for what is going to be another great year this fall."
Career Development: Troy practices from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the spring. Lindsey has already shown that he is willing to move it for something important (players attending Troy's WNIT home game) and this week is no different.
Troy's Office of Student-Athlete Services is hosting its annual Troy University Athletics Networking Night in the Stadium Club of the Vet Tuesday evening. This event allows Troy student-athletes to practice the art of interviewing for jobs and connecting with business executives.
"We sit in these players' living rooms and bring their parents on campus and tell them our job is to prepare them for life after football," Lindsey said. "We don't want that to just be lip service. At some point, their playing days are going to be over and they are going to have to raise a family, any way we can help prepare our guys for that we want to do it."
Saturday Scrimmage: Saturday will be the first 'Moving Day' of spring practice as the Trojans will take part in their first scrimmage.
"It will be our first chance to play in game-like situations with referees," Lindsey said. "We want to make sure that we have great tempo on both sides of the ball and that our communication is solid. It is exciting to play some real football instead of just situations where we limit the team periods to certain things.
The scrimmage, which is open the public, is schedule to start at 10 a.m. in The Vet and will run approximately two hours.
