Boone, N.C. – A late first half surge by App State gave the Mountaineers enough momentum to hand Troy a 72-64 loss in Sun Belt Conference men's basketball action on Thursday night inside of Holmes Convocation Center.
The Trojans (11-18, 4-13 Sun Belt) only went to the charity stripe twice, going a perfect 3-of-3 but the Mountaineers (11-19, 6-11 Sun Belt) drew plenty of contact and made 11-of-18 (78.6 percent) free throws to hold on to their lead throughout the contest.
Sophomore Javan Johnson led all scorers with 17 points on 3-of-5 (60 percent) shooting from deep alongside six rebounds, two steals, a pair of assists and a block.
Senior BJ Miller followed behind with 14 points, a career-high tying five steals, three rebounds and one assist while sophomore Darian Adams dropped 12 points in only 20 minutes due to early foul trouble.
Both teams struggled to score early on, but Troy snuck out to a five-point lead (11-6) with 13 minutes remaining in the first. The Mountaineers fought back and eventually grabbed a 23-17 lead with 7:49 left.
The Trojans went on a 9-3 run to even the score at 26 with four minutes to go before App State answered with a 11-0 run that led to a 41-31 halftime lead. In the second half App State had all the momentum, as the Mountaineers increased their lead to as many as 19 (62-43; 10:01) before securing the victory.
QUOTING COACH CUNNINGHAM
"The game got away from us at the end of the first half. We were struggling offensively early on, but we were also playing good defense to keep it close before they went on the run to end the half. Which is the last thing we needed just because of our mental state right now."
"In the second half, we fought back at the end, but it was too late. Our offensive struggles continued; we are having a hard time getting consistent scoring and that was the key to the game once again tonight."
QUICK HITS
- Senior Alex Hicks nearly posted a double double in eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds
- Troy's three free throws made and attempted were a season low
- Miller has racked up 15 steals in the last four games (3.75 per game)
- 40 of Troy's 64 points came from inside the paint
