Troy Takes Finale from No. 16 Coastal

Â
The Trojans (11-13, 1-5) finally got that elusive first conference win thanks in part to a two-run homer from Drew Frederic and a grand slam from freshman Logan Cerny, both in the big third inning.
Â
Down three runs after a rocky first couple of innings, Frederic launched a 408-foot homer over left field to wake the Troy bats up – the junior was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. After a couple of singles and a walk, Cerny stepped up and roped a no-doubt grand slam to give the Trojans their first lead.
Â
The lead was enough with redshirt junior Cory Gill (1-1) on the mound for Troy. Normally Troy's closer, Gill battled through six innings with 117 pitches on the mound to pick up his first win of the year.
Â
Troy added runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the resilient Coastal (18-5-1, 5-1) squad wouldn't go away quietly. The Chants made things interesting with two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings – they had six players with multiple hits in the game.
Â
Responding to a two-run seventh from Coastal, Chase Smartt ripped a two-out, RBI double down the left field line then came in to score on a Manning Early RBI single – the sequence ended up being the game-winner for Troy.
Â
CCU starter Garret McDaniels (0-1) was handed his first career loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in the first three innings of the game. Troy's Ryan Fultz (1) picked up his first save of the season with a strikeout in a perfect ninth.

Quotable – Troy Head Coach Mark Smartt
"I'm really happy for our team. We fought like crazy all weekend and finally got one. All you can ever ask from your players is to give their all every time out and our team did that and finally got rewarded for their efforts."

Adding six runs in the big inning Sunday, Troy has now outscored opponents 22-10 in the third inning this season.
Â
Notable
• Troy left double digit runners on base in each of the three games in the series – 14 Friday, 10 Satruday and 13 Sunday.
Â
• Logan Cerny's third-inning grand slam was the first by a Troy player since Sadler Goodwin hit one against Louisiana in the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament in 2018.
Â
• The Troy/Coastal matchup was once again decided by three or fewer runs, marking the eighth straight regular season meeting that the game was this close.
Â
• Rigsby Mosley and Dalton Sinquefield both tallied two hits in the ballgame – the pair did so in all three games of the series.
