TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's tennis will open the conference play on Saturday, Mar.23 against Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State on Mar.24 in the series of home dual matches. The game will mark the first conference game for head coach Rolando Vargas, who was a former player and assistant coach for the Trojans.
Â
After the non-conference schedule, the Trojans finished with 14-1 overall, which marks one of the most successful starts in the program history. Having a relatively young team with a lot of depth in the roster, the team were able to reach the finals of HEB Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas, and defeat other solid programs in the nation.Â
Â
Vargas has a stable line up with Sophomore Pelayo Antuna and Junior Oskar Michalek having top two seeds in singles. Antuna went 15-2 overall and Michalek is 12-2 with nine-game winning streak after sitting out in the fall. In doubles, Antuna and Duan hold the impressive record of 9-2. Head coach Vargas tried 11 different doubles combinations during the fall and spring, but it is formed now for the conference play.
Â
Coastal Carolina (10-5) had a confident start in the season with a lot of experience in their lineup. Chanticleers are improved compared to the last season, as they were able to collect only six wins in the 2018 season. In the last year match up, The Trojans were able to defeat opponents from Coastal Carolina, 4-1. Appalachian State (4-11) will face South Alabama before traveling to Troy on Saturday Mar.24. The tip-off for the game is set to 11 a.m on Mar.23 and 10 a.m. on Mar.24. at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
