Troy Drops Midweek Match at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After winning the doubles point, Troy struggled in singles play falling to Samford, 4-3, at the Samford Tennis Center Thursday.

Samford's Holly Horsfall clinched the match for the Bulldogs on court four with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Troy's Chunxi Guo, but the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week paired with Pei Ju Hsieh to improve their double record to 8-0 with a 7-5 victory over Grace Jennings and Mary Katherine Lewis.

With three matches remaining before conference play, the Trojans are 4-4 on the season. Samford improved to 7-4 on the year.

DOUBLES
• Maria Casas Blas and Celia Montero Estevan fell, 6-2, to Horsfall and Arianna Beltrame in the first double match on court three.
• Matea Mihaljevic and Tingting Pei knocked off Elsa Pool and Natalia De Ugarte, 6-4, to draw Troy level for the doubles point.
• Guo and Hsieh got Troy clinched the point for the Trojans with a 7-5 win over Jennings and Lewis. The duo is one of two Sun Belt pairs to remain unbeaten with more than three decisions.

SINGLES
• Elsa Pool opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Estevan on No. 2 court.
• Mihaljevic fell to Jennings, 6-4, 6-2 to give Samford a 2-1 advantage in the match.
• Pei fought back from an early deficit, but ultimately fell to De Ugarte, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
• Horsfall then clinched the match for the Bulldogs on the No. 4 court with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Guo.
• Troy earned a point with a Hsieh's 6-2, 6-4 win over Beltrame at No. 5.
• Casas Blas defeated Lewis 6-2, 7-6 to conclude the day.
