Men’s Tennis Travels to Corpus Christi, Texas

TROY, Alabama – Troy (8-0) is set to travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to participate in "HEB Invitational." The Tournament that is held by Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders is one of the oldest in college sports. The Trojans will open the tournament against New Mexico State in the dual match on Friday, Feb.22.
The Trojans are returning to action after defeating Abraham Baldwin Agricultural at home on Feb, 15. The historical start under Vargas will be tested at one of the most prestigious tournaments in college tennis, and only eight of the Trojans will travel to Texas. The traveling roster includes Pelayo Antuna, Oskar Michalek, Manuel Bernard, Christopher Tasker, Jiaqi Duan, Antonio Selma, Jorge Poyatos and Luis Foix.
About the tournament
The 53rd annual "H-E-B Tournament of Champions" is the longest running college team tournament in America. It was a college team tournament when the NCAA championships were only a singles tournament. The eight teams will be playing in "H-E-B" are Depaul, Louisiana-Lafayette, New Mexico State, Troy, UTRGV, UTSA, Tennessee Tech, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Matches will be played at the Islanders Thomas J Henry Tennis Center and H-E-B Tennis Center.
Scouting the Opponents
New Mexico State (4-2) played six dual matches through January and February with wins over Hawaii, UC Riverside, Western New Mexico, and Mesa CC. Sophomore Louis Menard holds the best winning percentage among the team with 13-5 overall record and a 4-1 record at #2 singles spot. Overall, Aggies have .578 singles winning percentage and .696 percentage in doubles play.
