TROY, Ala. – After opening the 2019 campaign with four games in the friendly confines of Riddle-Pace Field, Troy baseball will trek to Ruston, La., for a three-game set against Louisiana Tech this weekend; first pitches are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday and a doubleheader starting at 11a.m. Sunday.
The Trojans (2-2) split their opening weekend matchup with Central Michigan, winning the first two games of the set before dropping the final two. Troy was originally scheduled to face off with No. 26 Southern Miss in Pearl, Miss., Wednesday before the game was postponed due to the possibility of inclement weather.
A pair of new stars emerged in the opening set, sophomore Reed Smith and freshman Tanner Jackson. Smith played the hero in the one-run, Opening Night win as he launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to break a tie ballgame. Jackson produced all weekend, hitting a homer and a double, while driving in four runs and posting a 1.371 OPS.
As Troy meets Louisiana Tech (4-0) for the first time ever, it will call on a host of experienced arms for the starting roles. Sophomore Levi Thomas (0-0, 0.00) was impressive in his start on Opening Night – 4.2 IP, 7 K, 2 BB, 0 R – and will get the call once again in this Friday's matchup. JUCO-transfer Grant Stewart will make his first start in a Troy uniform on Saturday and senior Sadler Goodwin (0-1, 7.50) is set to start in the finale.
SCOUTING LA TECH
The Bulldogs come into their first home series of the season having won their first four games of the year. LA Tech opened with a high-scoring sweep at Southeastern Louisiana – Troy's opponent next weekend – then followed up with an extra-inning victory over Louisiana Wednesday night.
Head coach Lane Burroughs leads the veteran-clad squad in his third season with the program. The Diamond Dogs are led offensively by Taylor Young, who is batting at a .500 clip and has scored five runs in their first four games. They have yet to announce starters for this weekend's matchups. Â
