BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Troy indoor track and field wrapped up a memorable season with a historic third-place finish at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex Monday and Tuesday. The Trojans claimed three gold medals and finished third at the championship with 81 points – the highest finish and point total in program history.
Gemma Finch won a gold medal and set a school indoor record with a 2:10.84 run in the 800m, just a second better than teammate Tiarra Bailey, who claimed silver and ran the second-fastest time in school history.
The Trojans dominated the relay races, winning both the distance medley and the 4x400m. The DMR team, consisting of Gemma Finch, Madison Kennedy, Tiarra Bailey and Tanner Guest, set the school record in its race with a time of 11:47.14. Also taking spots on the podium were three other individuals in four different events. Precious Ogba finished second in the 400m to take silver and then earned the bronze in the 200m dash. Madison Kennedy finished 0.11 seconds behind Ogba in the 400m to win a bronze medal of her own. Lastly, Samara Nelson threw the shot put 14.21 meters to take a bronze in her event.
