Troy Struggles at Georgia Southern
2/15/2019 11:45:00 PM | Basketball (M)
Statesboro, Ga. – Troy was unable to get in a shooting rhythm and dropped a 76-51 decision to Georgia Southern in Sun Belt Conference men's basketball action inside of Hanner Fieldhouse on Friday night.Â
Â
The Trojans (11-14, 4-9 Sun Belt) could not find an offensive rhythm as they shot 28.3 percent (17-of-60) and only made four threes on the night.Â
Â
Freshman KJ Simon led Troy with a career-high 12 points on a career-high five field goals made. Simon added three steals, two rebounds and an assist to his stat line.Â
Â
Sophomore Javan Johnson and Darian Adams both poured in 10 points. Johnson tallied four rebounds as well while Adams recorded five rebounds, a career-high four steals and three assists.
Â
Despite only sinking eight field goals, the Trojans kept the score close at the break as they trailed Georgia Southern (16-10, 8-5 Sun Belt) by five, 32-27 after the first 20 minutes.
Â
The game swung completely in the Eagles' hands to begin the second half as Georgia Southern gained a 43-29 lead at the first media timeout (15:51). The Eagles would then secure the win by going on a 10-0 run immediately following the timeout.Â
Â
QUOTING COACH CUNNINGHAMÂ
"The game got away from us in the first five minutes of the second half, but I was pleased with what we did in the first half. With all the personnel adversity we are facing right now, particularly with BJ Miller going down, this was not a game to not have your starting point guard."
Â
"Overall we held them to 43 percent shooting, 25 percent on threes and forced 19 turnovers but we were just so bad offensively especially in the second half which totally took us out of the game."
Â
UP NEXT
Troy will have a few extra days of rest before facing in-state conference rival South Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Trojan Arena with the game broadcast live on ESPN+.Â
