Troy Baseball Preview: Outfielders

TROY, Alabama – The excitement is boiling over around the Troy baseball program as it gets set to open the season in two days. In preparation, TroyTrojans.com will give one final insider's look into a position group – the outfielders.
Â
Quite the opposite of the infielders discussed yesterday, the Trojans' outfielders may be one of the more talented on the field but lack crucial experience – Rigsby Mosley is the only outfielder remaining from 2018's star-studded cast.
Â
Mosley had one of the more memorable freshman seasons in school history last year and is poised to lead a wave of new talent into 2019. The reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American, Mosley batted at a .322 clip with an impressive five triples, five homers and 51 RBI.
Â
"We have the Freshman of the Year in left, and no experience anywhere else," head coach Mark Smartt said. "These guys are going to be looked upon to replace guys we lost and do the same kind of things. That's the recipe for struggle; trying to be something you're not."
Â
Beginning the year in center will be highly-touted freshman Logan Cerny, who was no stranger to success in high school. Following his senior year at Lawrenceville HS (Ga.), Cerny was named the Georgia 7A Player of the Year and a High School All-American.
Â
Standing in right field will be local product, and another freshman, Tanner Jackson – a 6-2, 210-pound power hitter from Houston Academy in Dothan. Both Cerny and Jackson were named to Perfect Game's ranking of the top 30 freshmen in the Sun Belt Conference this season.
Â
Adding some depth to the outfield will be sophomore utility player Reed Smith, junior lefty Dalton Sinquefield, experienced junior Tyler Head and speedy freshman Hudson Hartsfield.
Â
Troy baseball opens the 2019 season with a four-game series against Central Michigan beginning this Friday at Riddle-Pace Field. Season tickets are still available for purchase at TroyTrojans.com/Tickets or by contacting the Troy Ticket Office at (334) 670-3681.
