TROY, Ala. – Troy picked up a key divisional win over Appalachian State Friday night in Trojan Arena, 3-1 (27-29, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22). The Trojans have won 14-straight home matches dating back to last season, tied for the eighth-longest home win streak in the nation.
The Trojans (19-5, 9-3 Sun Belt) secured their ninth Sun Belt win of the season which is the second-most conference wins in a single season in school history (2012, 10-5 Sun Belt). The win keeps Troy in the battle for the Sun Belt East division with a key match against division-leader Coastal Carolina Saturday night.
Serving was the story of the night for Troy with six players registering at least one ace. Cheyenne Hayes and Amara Anderson each tallied two while Ashley Guenveur, Lacey Jeffcoat, Kiara Barrett and Natalie Hummel each found their mark once.
Anderson (43 AS/11 DIG) and Guenveur (10 K/10 DIG) each notched a double-double in the win, their 11th and seventh of the season, respectively. Julia Brooks led all players with 15 kills while Hayes recorded 14.
Jeffcoat was the heart and soul of the defense, digging 22 balls on the night. The Trojans had a block party at the net with Brooks registering five total blocks. Caitlin Cooper and Halston Hiller joined in on the fun with three blocks each.
"It was a great bounce back win for us," head coach Josh Lauer said. "I love the resilience we showed after losing the first set. Our serving was fantastic tonight… We put in some hard work this week and we executed really well tonight."
How It Happened
The first set of the match went back-and-forth throughout its entirety and contained 19 ties and seven lead changes. The Trojans failed to capitalize on three set points and fell to the Mountaineers, 27-29.
Troy came to life in the second set, fueled by Anderson's hot serving streak. The Trojans went on a 9-0 run with the sophomore at the line to open up a 19-5 lead over App State. Troy later pushed its lead to 13 at 20-7 before cruising to a 25-16 set two win.
The Trojans kept their foot on the gas pedal in the third set of the night, climbing to a 17-12 advantage late in the set. Brooks took the set over with back-to-back solo blocks to put the Trojans up 24-16. The freshman put the cherry on top with a kill to clinch the set, 25-17.
Troy hasn't lost back-to-back matches all season and wouldn't be denied in the fourth, and final, set of the match. Hayes recorded seven of her 14 kills in the last set to propel the Trojans to a 25-22 set four win.
