GADSDEN, Ala. – Troy led wire-to-wire at the Chris Banister Golf Classic and left the RTJ Silver Lakes Golf Course with its first win of the season following Tuesday's final round. Four Trojans finished in the top 10 individually led by Elisabeth Preus' third-place performance.
"Wins are hard to get in college golf, and we're certainly excited to be coming home with the trophy," head coach Randy Keck said. "We separated ourselves from the field in the first round and that helped when we didn't play too well down the stretch. We are better than we played today, but we're coming home with a win, and we've got a really good golf team with a lot of depth in the lineup."
Troy shot 20-over par as a team in Tuesday's final round on a course that played to an average of +7.5 shots over par per player or 30-over for a team. Preus carded her first collegiate round under par with a 1-under 71 thanks to four birdies on the day; complete hole-by-hole scoring was not provided.
Nicole Lorup turned in her second strong performance to open the year as she finished in fifth place at 6-over for the three rounds. Lorup carded nine birdies in the tournament and tied for the best in the field on the par 5 holes at 4-under.
Troy picked up 10 wins in the event after finishing four shots ahead of Murray State and nine shots in front of James Madison.
ShaeLee Scarberry recorded her first top 10 finish as a Trojan after placing sixth overall thanks to a 1-over 73 in Tuesday's final round, while Judith Castro tied for seventh place after a final round 80. Ainsley Cowart tied for 17thplace and Anna Claire Little tied for 32ndoverall.
The win marks the fifth straight season that the Trojans have won a team event and its Troy's third straight win at the Chris Banister Golf Classic.
Next up for Troy is a trip to Kiawah Island, S.C., and the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Oct. 13-15.
