TROY, Ala. – It was a picture-perfect senior day for the eight Troy Trojans soccer seniors, as Troy dropped Georgia Southern University 4-1 Sunday afternoon.
All four Troy (9-2-3, 4-1-1 Sun Belt) goals were scored by seniors, with Maddie Brune adding a pair of goals, and Kiersten Edlund scoring once and picking up two assists. The victory pushes Troy into a tie with South Alabama for first place in the Sun Belt standings.
Troy struck first Sunday, when Edlund connected on a penalty kick in the 15th minute. The PK was awarded to the Trojans, after a Georgia Southern (4-6-1, 1-2-1 Sun Belt) player was whistled for fouling Nathali DaSilva in the 18-yard box.
After the Eagles tied the match, Brune flicked an Edlund corner kick into the middle of the net for Troy's second goal of the match in the final moments of the 21st minute.
Just over three minutes later, it was DaSilva's turn to find the back of the net, as she received a perfect pass from Melissa Kuya-Strobel and fired a right-footed shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead.
After the halftime break, Troy and Georgia Southern continued to battle, but neither side was able to find the back of the net again until the 82nd minute when Brune scored her second goal of the match off a perfect Edlund service on a free-kick.
In the victory, seniors Haleigh Mercer and Miranda Schoening made two saves a piece.
GED TALKS:
"It's always nice when the seniors can perform on senior day. There's certainly a few things we need to tighten up with the overall game but we got another win at home and another three points. Today is another step closer to us clinching a bid into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. That's really all we could have asked for going into the weekend. I think we really tried to instill the importance of playing well at home to our team, and this home stand we played fantastically well. Championships are won on Sundays and we've really talked about the importance of playing well on Sunday's. We have unbelievable fan support which we're blessed to have so now we need to take our home form onto the road next week. We're getting used to winning and what winning feels like. We just need to make winning a habit."
On the Edlund and the rest of the seniors:
"Kiersten has been nothing short of magnificent. All eight of our seniors have made their contributions in different ways. All the different ways have been fantastic. Hopefully we can see Kiersten get the all-time program mark for assists and Maddie with minutes played. The senior class has been truly remarkable."
Maddie Brune:
"I don't think we could have drawn up a better performance for us on senior day. This class has put everything that we could into improving this program and getting it to where it is today. This is a huge payoff and reward for this class and all of the hard work we've put in. Where we are in the standings gives us more fuel to keep going and keep pushing. We're getting confidence from knowing that we have a shot to win the conference. Troy means so much to me and I've been through a lot here. To see the success of this team and the chemistry we have is very rewarding for me. I can't imagine a better team to be on or a better way for senior day to have gone."
