ATLANTA – Troy closed out the first road weekend of conference play with a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-14, 25-17) victory over Georgia State Saturday night at the GSU Sports Arena. The win marked the first time the Trojans have started Sun Belt Conference play 3-1 since 2012.
Amara Anderson turned in her eighth double-double of the season recording 40 assists and 11 digs. Cheyenne Hayes led the offensive efforts with 19 kills while Ashley Guenveur turned in her fourth consecutive double-digit kill match with 10 kills.
Lacey Jeffcoat and Natalie Hummel anchored Troy's (13-3, 3-1 Sun Belt) defense with 20 digs and 11 digs, respectively.
"I'm really proud of our fight tonight," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We struggled early to find some rhythm but did a much better job tonight maintaining our composure. We had great energy and contributions from our bench tonight as well, and that made a big difference in the momentum of the match. Lacey Jeffcoat was our anchor tonight. She played really great defense and made some rally saving plays tonight that were phenomenal. All in all, it was a really good team effort."
Set One
Troy hopped out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back maintaining its grasp on the lead through the entirety of the set. Mid-way through the opening set, the Panthers (5-10, 1-3 Sun Belt) pulled back within three with a 4-0 run but kills by Julia Brooks and Hayes put the set out of reach for Georgia State giving Troy the set one victory, 25-21.
Set Two
However, Georgia State responded well in the second set. With Troy leading 12-10, the Panthers went on a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. Troy's offense struggled to string a run together allowing for Georgia State to take set two, 20-25.
Set Three
The teams traded the opening few points of the set before Hayes powered home a trio of kills to give Troy a 9-5 advantage. A 5-0 run midway through the set made a deficit too great for the Panthers to overcome, and Troy convincingly took the third set, 25-14.
Set Four
Georgia State opened the fourth set looking for vengeance taking an early 6-4 lead. The Trojans chipped away at the Panther's lead, eventually tying the game at 10 all. A pair of big runs by the Trojans set up for a match-winning kill by Halston Hillier. Troy took the fourth and final set 25-17.
