SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The heart and spirit of the Troy University soccer program was on full display Friday evening, as the red-hot Trojans defeated the Texas State Bobcats 1-0 in the first overtime period at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The senior combination was in full-effect once again Friday, as Kiersten Edlund delivered a perfect corner kick service that found classmate Maddie Brune on the back post, who calmly headed a shot past Bobcat goalkeeper Heather Martin with just one-minute remaining in the first overtime period.
On the goal, Edlund recorded her 12th assist of the season, and recorded her 18th career helper which is a new Troy record.
With the victory the Trojans (11-2-4, 6-1-2 Sun Belt) clinch the number two overall seed in next month's Sun Belt Conference Tournament and have earned 20 points for the first time in program history. The previous record was 19 overall points set back in 2015.
Senior goalkeeper Haleigh Mercer came up clutch again for Troy making eight saves to earn her fourth individual shutout of the season.
Troy concludes the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Louisiana. Kickoff from Lafayette is set for 3 p.m.
GED TALKS:
"Tonight, was a great team performance after a challenging couple of days of travel. Overall, we played against an excellent Texas State team on the road, and both teams probably deserved a victory. We're very excited to score once again off a set piece, which was something we were working on extensively this week in training. Finishing with the most points in SBC history with one match remaining speaks to the program and the people that are in it. The players work for everyone else and it is a pleasure to be surrounded by such a great group of women. The match ball went to Haleigh and Maddie tonight, because without Haleigh we might have lost the match in regulation. This evening Haleigh did an excellent job of leading our team from the back-line. Overall, this was a nice Friday evening for our entire program."
