Troy, Ala. – Troy men's basketball is set to begin Sun Belt Conference play on Thursday when it welcomes Coastal Carolina to Trojan Arena for Dollar Night with tip set for 6 p.m.

The Trojans (7-5) extended their win streak to four games after grinding out a 71-63 win over UAPB at home on Dec. 29, to end non-conference action. Senior Alex Hicks posted his second double double in as many games with 18 points and 10 rebounds.Â

Three other Troy players joined Hicks in double figures as seniors Jordon Varnado and BJ Miller dropped 15 and 14, respectively. Varnado added three rebounds, two assists and a steal to his stat line while Miller posted five assists, three rebounds and a game-high three steals. Junior Charles Norman poured in 14 points on an effective 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc.Â

On the season, Varnado leads the Trojans averaging 17.3 points per game, eighth in the Sun Belt Conference while Hicks paces the team in rebounds per game (7.8) which is the fourth-most in conference. Hicks leads Troy and the Sun Belt Conference shooting 55.6 percent (65-117) and Miller paces Troy averaging 3.2 assists per game.

Coastal Carolina fell in its final non-conference game to College of Charleston, 73-71. In the game, four Chanticleers notched double figures led by senior Zac Cuthbertson who posted a double double in 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Tre Brown followed behind with 16 points including a 4-of-5 clip from three-point range.

Cuthbertson leads the Chants averaging 20.1ppg, third-best in conference, and 9.1rpg, second-most in conference while shooting 54.1 percent, third in SBC.

Series History
Thursday's contest marks the fifth-ever meeting between the two teams. Troy leads the series 3-1 and is 1-1 when the game is played at Trojan Arena. The first ever meeting was Dec. 30, 1997 in Toledo, Ohio, where Troy won, 74-60.

In the last meeting on Feb. 15, 2018, then-senior Kevin Baker hit a free throw with 22 seconds remaining to lift the Trojans over CCU, 66-65 inside of the HTC Center. Then-junior Alex Hicks led Troy with 16 points including a perfect 2-of-2 mark from behind the arc and six boards while Baker added 14 points, five assists and two steals.
