Â
TROY, Ala. – Troy's Tron Folsom and Tyler Sumpter have been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday after the pair played large roles in Troy's victory at Nebraska on Saturday.
Â
Folsom, a senior linebacker from Alma, Ga., recorded a game-high 14 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a pass break up in the 24-19 victory over the Cornhuskers. His first career sack came with Nebraska driving near midfield and led to an interception on the following play. He now leads the Trojans in tackles (21), tackles for loss (3.5) and interceptions (2).
Â
The Troy defense forced three turnovers and limited Nebraska to just 5-for-15 on third down. The Trojans recorded three sacks and 10 tackles for loss against the Cornhuskers in Troy's fifth victory over a Power Five opponent since moving to the FBS level in 2001.
Â
Sumpter, a sophomore kicker and punter, averaged 53.8 yards on five punts, including a booming 79-yard punt that flipped the field and led to Troy's opening points of the game. His game average finished just one yard shy of tying the single-game Troy school record.
Â
A native of Hoover, Ala., Sumpter's 79-yard punt is the longest in the country this season at the DI level, is the longest in Troy's FBS history and the second-longest in the school's DI history. He added a 37-yard field goal and was perfect on all three of his extra-point attempts. Sumpter is now a perfect 47-of-47 on extra-point attempts in his career and 9-of-12 on career field goal attempts.
Â
Troy opens Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday when it travels to ULM for a 6 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.
