TROY, Ala. -- Following three intense days to open fall camp, Troy took a step back on Monday for a recovery day both on and off the practice field. Head coach Neal Brown guided his squad through a 75-minute practice in shells on the grass practice fields, and the Trojans will hit the swimming pool in the afternoon to complete their recovery.
Â
On the field, the Trojans began to install their red zone packages on offense and defense, while the special teams focused on the hands team. Practice ended with Brown running the team through various end-of-game situations.
Â
Tuesday will mark the toughest practice of camp to date as the Trojans will strap on full pads for the first time since the spring. An off day awaits on Wednesday as the players will turn their focus to servicing the community before a stretch of six straight practices including the first scrimmage of camp on Saturday.
Â
Notable
Head coach Neal Brown was asked after practice for players who have stood out so far during camp. He singled out offensive lineman Austin Stidham, wide receivers Deondre Douglas, Damion Willis and Sam Letton along with running back B.J. Smith on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, defensive end Jarvis Hayes, linebacker Carlton Martial, cornerback Terence Dunlap and defensive tackle Travon Mathis all caught Brown's eye.

On recovery day …Â
"We let them sleep in today. It's day four, and we try as a standard to not go more than three days hard in a row. So, we had a light day today. We had to put shoulder pads on for part of the practice to cover the acclamation period. It was about game situations today, we worked a lot of situations. The thing I like about training camp is you have them all day and you can do a lot of teaching. As far as recovery, it's all about wanting to be fresh. When guys get fatigued that is when you see the muscle  injuries and things like that. We've got plenty of time. They give you 25 practices, and I think that is plenty of time to get ready especially with the new rules in the summer. So, when we have really tough physical practices like we did yesterday, we follow it up with a recovery day. We'll come out tomorrow in our first day in full pads and get a lot of work done.
Â
On practicing in full pads…Â
"We'll be controlled but we have to tackle more this fall camp because we didn't do it at all during the spring. We had one day of full tackle during the spring with our No. 1s. We want to be a really good defensive team, and to be a good defensive team you have to be physical, you have to be able to tackle, so we have to give our guys opportunities to do that in live situations. We start off slow with the full contact and grow into in. We're going to have a scrimmage on Saturday and that will be our first real live tackle to the ground situation."
