Foreign Tour 2018: Service Project

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – The Troy men's basketball program continued its trip in Costa Rica with a service project and played against Laurentian University from Canada on Friday.
In the morning, the team visited Holy Spirit Orphanage and was given a tour of the facility which consists of a mini zoo, three floors where orphans live, a cafeteria and two turf soccer fields. The orphanage houses individuals from toddler-aged to 18 who were abandoned by their families.
The latter part of the trip to the orphanage the team played soccer with and against the kids at their recess time.
"We saw some kids at the orphanage that are basically homeless, and it was a great experience," senior Jordon Varnado said. "We enjoyed our time there, we played soccer with them and it was a great joy to put smiles on their faces."
After a little bit of rest the team traveled to BN Arena to face off against Laurentian University where the Trojan defeated the Voyageurs, 83-59. Varnado posted a double-double in 17 points alongside 11 rebounds, sophomore Malik Burnett filled the stat sheet with 14 points, seven boards, a pair of assists and two steals. Fellow sophomore Javan Johnson dropped 13 points, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc with three assists.
"It was a pretty good game," Varnado said. "Laurentian is a solid team, they were running the floor very well. We had to slow down and play our game and we were able to come out victorious."
QUOTING COACH CUNNINGHAM
"The best part of the day was the time the team spent at the orphanage," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "It was an opportunity for the entire staff and players to see a situation where the kids are less fortunate than what any of us dealt with growing up, and it was an opportunity to see that and appreciate where we came from with the upbringing we all had. When our guys got to play in the indoor soccer field it was a blessing to see how much fun both our guys and the kids had, they all had a blast."
"I was pleased with the way we played today. We had the jitters early on, I thought we were throwing the ball all over the place and shooting the ball too quick with the low shot clock. We eventually settled in and got in a good rhythm which led to a win."

Today we were given the opportunity to volunteer and play with kids in an orphanage. Let's just say we will stick to hooping 😂🇨🇷#PuraVida #OneTROY pic.twitter.com/ChXSf2snGG
