TROY, Ala. -- Troy scrimmaged for the final time of fall camp Friday under the lights in The Vet. The Trojans' annual Student Appreciation Scrimmage kicked off at 5:05 p.m. and that start time was no coincidence; Troy opens the season on Sept. 1 against No. 22 Boise State in The Vet at 5:05 p.m.

"I really appreciate the students turning out and I hate that the weather delayed us a little bit there at the start -- it's good for our football team because the last two years we've had to deal with weather delays and we've handled those situations well and we won," head coach Neal Brown said. "It was the first time we came out of our new locker room so there were some mechanic things we need to work through. I'm looking forward to a really good turnout tomorrow at Fan Day."
The quarterback battle between KalebBarker and Sawyer Smith is still on-going and the offense had the upper hand on Friday. Troy returns four starters on its offensive line and a handful of talented receivers to accompany the new quarterback and new stable of running backs.
"Offensively I thought it was a good day, I didn't think it was our best day," Brown said. "We've got to continue to evolve; we've got to run the ball better. That's something we've emphasized in the spring and the fall. We did make some plays down the field in the pass game which was good. I thought both quarterbacks did some nice things, I have to wait to watch the film before I evaluate them.
"I was really disappointed in our defense. I think that was the worst scrimmage we've had defensively in probably the four years I've been the head coach. I was disappointed in our ability to get lined up, and I was disappointed in our physicality. We've got a long ways to go there. I think we might be reading our press clippings a little too much right on defense. I don't think we are playing very humble right now, and we are definitely not playing hungry enough."
Notable
Sophomore long snapper Cameron Kaye was placed on scholarship at the end of the scrimmage. During a punting drill, his mother Kimberly surprised her son with scholarship papers from head coach Neal Brown. Kaye, a native of Naples, Fla., played in all 13 games as Troy's snapper on field goals and extra points and handled all the long snapping duties in Troy's victory over North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl.
