Troy Takes First Leg of Midweek Matchups
4/17/2018 9:43:00 PM | Baseball
Â
The Trojans (24-12) scored three in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull away with yet another dominating midweek win – outscoring opponents 58-27 over the last five games of the streak.
Â
After Drew Frederic stole his Sun Belt-leading 19th base of the season, senior Joey Denison drove him in with his conference-leading 45th RBI of the season in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Sadler Goodwin and Chase Smartt followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to extend the lead even more. Sophomore Tyler Head recorded his first hit and first RBI with a single to right center in the eighth.
Â
Max Newton (2-0) was effective through his five-inning start – giving up just two runs on five hits around four strikeouts. The Trojans' impressive bullpen took over after Newton, as Zack Lightsey, Levi Thomas and Will Carnley suffocated the Bulldogs (7-31) in the final four innings.
Â
Lightsey allowed just two baserunners in two innings, while Thomas and Carnley both struck out the side in their respective relief innings to close out the game.
Â
Overall, Brandon Lockridge and Drew Frederic led Troy's offensive attack each with multi-hit games – Frederic was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Lockridge was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Â
Â
Alabama A&M's woes continued with another disappointing defeat – Casey Warner (0-2) took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in three innings.
Â
Notable
• Troy has won seven straight midweek games since the one-run loss at No. 26 Auburn on February 21. The Trojans haven't lost a midweek game at Riddle-Pace Field since May 3 last year.
Â
• Joey Denison drove in his league-leading 45th RBI of the season with a single in the seventh – an average of 1.25 a game.
Â
• Drew Frederic improved on his conference-leading stat, as well, stealing his 18th base this year – he entered ranked 22nd nationally in the category.
Â
• Sophomore Tyler Head, in just the third at-bat of his career, picked up his first hit and first RBI with one swing of the bat in the eighth inning.
