TROY, Alabama- Troy softball (27-17, 11-7 SBC) remained hot as it picked up its seventh straight win and second consecutive Sun Belt sweep with a 6-3 victory over Coastal Carolina (22-23, 5-13 SBC) on Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Â
Extra base hits and double plays paved the way for the Trojans in game three of the series as Logan Calhoun, Stephanie Snyder and Taylor Corbett each posted doubles and Brooke Echols recorded Troy's third triple of the season. Defensively, Madeline Porter was quick on her feet at third, turning two of three of Troy's double plays in the game.
Â
The Trojans plated runs in the first four innings of the game as a couple of walks, a sacrifice bunt from Porter and a sacrifice fly from Snyder brought Calhoun across for the first run of the game. The Chanticleers answered back with an RBI-double, but Troy didn't allow the game to be tied for long.
Â
Two back-to-back RBI-doubles from Corbett and Calhoun plated Erica Davis and Corbett as Troy took the 3-1 lead through two innings. Defense was solid as the Trojans kept the Chanticleers off the plate for the next three innings.
Â
Snyder led off the third with Troy's third double of the game and advanced to third on a hard-hit single from Kaylee Hussey. An infield single from Hope Hernandez frazzled the defense, allowing Snyder to make it home before the Chanticleers ended the inning.
Â
Troy posted double plays to end both of the third and fourth innings, leaving runners stranded for Coastal Carolina.
Â
The Trojans used that momentum at the plate as Porter drew a five-pitch walk and Snyder reached on a fielder's choice, but both runners were called safe. Brooke Echols hit her first career triple, bringing in Porter and Snyder as Troy took a 6-1 lead.
Â
Coastal Carolina rallied back in the sixth innings plating two runs on a double, a few singles and and a walk, but the Troy defense came through clutch as Porter found Katie Webb for Troy's third double play of the game, leaving the bases juiced and the tying run at first.
Â
Three easy outs in the top of the seventh, ended the series, giving Troy its 11th Sun Belt victory of the year.
Â
Annie Willis earned her 18th start in the circle, and threw five-innings before Peyton Glover ended the game in relief. Willis finished the afternoon allowing three runs, only walking one batter and fanning five. The freshman picked up the win to improve to 14-4 with 1.99 ERA.
Â
QUOTABLE
"I thought we did a good job," head coach Beth Mullins said. "We stuck to what we are great at, which has been pitching and defense. We added some timely hits, and when we do that we can win a lot of ball games. Annie (Willis) did a great job giving us five solid innings and Peyton (Glover) came in and shut the door."
