TROY, Alabama- Troy softball (26-17, 10-7 SBC) continued its winning streak as it won both games of the Friday night doubleheader against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (22-22, 5-12 SBC) at the Troy Softball Complex.
The 12th-ranked Trojan defense continued to impress as it shutout the Chanticleers in game one of the doubleheader and only allowed one run to cross the plate in the final game of the night.
Game one: Troy 1, Coastal Carolina 0
Troy plated its lone run of the game in the third inning as Erica Davis led off with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt from freshman Hope Hernandez advanced Davis to third and a defensive miscue from Coastal Carolina allowed Taylor Corbett to get on base, earning the RBI as Davis stepped across the plate.
Corbett also recorded Troy's second and final hit of the game, with a bunt, beating the throw to first. Both teams struggled to get the ball on the ground as Troy hit 11 fly balls and the Chanticleers added eight of their own.
Coastal Carolina out-hit the Trojans topping Troy three hits to two, but for the sixth time this season, the Trojans defense kept the opposition from plating runs.
Annie Willis threw her third complete game shutout of the season. The freshman threw five strikeouts and improved to 13-4 on the season with a 1.89 ERA. She leads the conference with fewest runs allowed.
Game two: Troy 4, Coastal Carolina 1
Two, two-run innings lifted the Trojans over Coastal Carolina in the final game of the night, behind a two-RBI double from Madeline Porter, that nearly cleared the wall.
A single up the middle from Hernandez put the first hit on the board for the Trojans. A wild pitch led to the first run of the game and Calhoun followed with an RBI-single, scoring Hernandez and giving Troy the 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless third, a single up the middle from Corbett and a walk for Calhoun put two runners on for Porter. Porter hit her seventh double of the season, driving in Corbett from second and Calhoun from first.
Coastal cut into Troy's lead in the top of the seventh, scoring on a sacrifice fly. With runners on first and second and the tying run at the plate, the Trojans remained calm to get an easy third out, winning the game and taking the series.
Junior Peyton Glover also added a complete game, only allowing one run in her seven innings of work. The Grayson, Ga., native tossed three strikeouts and improved to 9-5 this season.
