TROY, Alabama – Troy head women's golf coach Randy Keck bolstered his roster Friday with the signing of three top international players to join the program beginning this fall – Nicole Lorup (Denmark), Camila Ugalde (Mexico) and Belinda May (New Zealand).
Lorup, who competed for the Danish National Team, is ranked among the top 2,300 female amateurs in the world. She is the 19thranked junior in Denmark and ranks in the top 300 European female amateurs (under 21). In 2017, she claimed victories at the Tulip Golf Challenge and the Storstomspokalen Cup, and has turned in top-five performances at the Molleaaen Open, Campine Junior Golf Classic and Kronborg Masters.
"Nicole is going to bring a wealth of experience to our program," Keck said. "She's had a lot of success on the international stage and has a lot of discipline within her practice regiment and her fitness level."
Ugalde, who trains at the Jack Nicklaus Academy in Merida, Mexico, has registered 12 top-10 finishes in regional events over the past two seasons in addition to four top-10 finishes in national amateur events. Camila's sister, Natalia, originally signed with Keck at Tulsa before she went on to become a three-time All-American at Wayland Baptist.
"Camila comes from a very talented golf family," Keck said. "She has played on the big stage a lot in her young career and has had tremendous success. She has a very good short game and is good with the driver off the tee. She trains daily with some of the best junior golfers in Mexico at the Jack Nicklaus Academy and is extremely experienced."
May placed second in the 17-under division of the National North Island Women's in 2017 and won the Northland 36-Hole Stroke Play Championship by nine shots. She placed 11thoverall in the 2018 National North Island Women's and qualified for the Northland Senior Women's Provincial each of the last three seasons.
As a 14-year old, May qualified for the US Kids Teen World Championship in North Carolina after winning seven of the eight qualifying events; she would go on to finish 23rdoverall in the international event.
"Belinda brings a lot of firepower," Keck said. "She is going to come in and shoot some really low scores for us. She is long off the tee and is experienced well beyond her years. She had competed on the national scene in both golf and pistol shooting and handles her nerves pretty well in competition."
Troy opens play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Sunday in search of its fourth conference title in the past five seasons.
