MACON, Georgia – The Troy women's golf team continued its strong spring season with a sixth place finish at The Brickyard Collegiate as played concluded Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans, who won the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate last weekend, knocked off No. 40 LSU by 19 shots at The Brickyard.
"We had a great round yesterday but came out and played a little tight today," head coach Randy Keck said. "We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and heading into the Sun Belt Championship feeling like we have a chance to win. When we started in the fall, we said at the end of the spring we wanted to have a chance at the conference championship and we've put ourselves in that position."
Bianca Lohbauer turned in her second straight top-10 finish for the Trojans as she tied for ninth place overall at 7-over for the tournament. The Troy junior shot 3-over in Tuesday's final round as she sank one birdie and has now played 10 of her 12 spring rounds within four strokes of par.
Antonio Poate fired a 5-over to close out her second straight solid performance as she tied for 29thplace after tying for 11that Mimosa Hills. She has played her last five rounds at a 75.40 stroke average after posting an 80.00 average in the fall.
Vanderbilt won the 14-team event by 10 shots over Old Dominion, while Kennesaw State, Virginia Tech and Mercer rounded out the top five. The field featured nine teams ranked inside the top 100 nationally. Troy posted a 57-shot swing against LSU from the first time the schools squared off back in the fall at the Magnolia Invitational.
"Our recent results are a testament to how hard they've worked to improve," Keck said. "For us, it all goes back to our putting. When you're not losing a shot or two on every hole, you're going to have a chance to win. The major difference for us right now is we are trying to make putts instead of trying not to miss putts."
Eva Fabricius-Bjerre led Troy with a pair of birdies on Tuesday to shoot 4-over and finish tied for 35thplace overall. Sarah Harrison added one birdie and shot 78 on the day to finish tied for 54th, while Lindsey Harrison added a birdie in her round of 7-over en route to a tie for 65thplace. Playing as an individual, Abby Parks shot her best round of the week, a 12-over, and finished in 78thplace.
Troy won't have much time to ponder its recent success as the Trojans head to Miramar Beach, Fla., for the Sun Belt Championships this weekend. Play gets underway Sunday with the first of three rounds as the Trojans are in search of their fourth Sun Belt championship in the last five seasons.
