Long Ball Powers Troy on Day One of D9 Citrus Classic

ORLANDO- Sophomores Brooke Echols and Logan Calhoun each blasted their first home runs of the season in Troy's 4-0 win over FIU. The bats kept heating up as the Trojans (10-6) run-ruled UCSB 9-1 to kick-off the D9 Citrus Classic on Friday.
Game one: Troy 4, FIU 0
Echols got the party started with a solo home run in the second inning to give the Trojans an early advantage on the Panthers.
Both teams struggled to get anything else going until back-to-back singles from Carli Kayler and freshman Hope Hernandez put two runners on with two outs. Calhoun stepped up to the plate and blasted her first homer of the season, a three-run shot.
The defense did the rest of the work to keep the Panthers off the plate.
Annie Willis did work in the circle, throwing a complete game shutout, the first of her career. She fanned five, allowing only two hits and two walks. She has a 0.81 ERA through 26.0 innings of work.
Game two: Troy 9, UCSB 1
A six-run third inning for the Trojans powered them past the UCSB and they run-ruled the Gauchos 9-1.
Stephanie Snyder and Erica Davis both went 2-for-2 on the night as Snyder posted back-to-back doubles and Davis added her first triple of the season.
Troy got across the plate early as Snyder doubled and scored off of a sacrifice fly from Davis. The bats continued to be on first as Hope Hernandez led off with an infield single and Calhoun followed to get two runners on with no outs. A hot by pitch from Madeline Porter loaded the bases. The first run of the inning came across as A sacrifice fly from Snyder brought Calhoun home from third.
With the bases loaded, Davis slammed a triple into right field bring three runs across, and she came across on a wild pitch allowing Troy to take a convincing 6-1 lead in the third inning.
The score remained 7-1 until more singles from Davis and Hernandez put two runners on base, and an RBI single from Kayler brought Davis across for the second time. A walk loaded the bases as Porter stepped into the box. An RBI single from her gave Troy the 9-1 win after six innings.
Glover threw her third complete game of the season, giving up four hits and only allowing one run.

Troy will continue play in the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic with two games on Saturday against Fordham at 10:30 a.m., and Niagara at 3:30 p.m.

- Hope Hernandez made her first start of her collegiate career as the designated player. She finished the game going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Logan Calhoun leads the team with .333 at the plate, with 17 hits and 16 runs.
