ATLANTA, Ga. – On the final week of the regular season, Troy will head north for a test against Georgia State on Thursday with the Trojans looking to lock in a top-four seed and first-round bye for the ensuing Sun Belt Tournament next week.
Â
A crucial 73-67 win against ULM on Saturday propelled Troy (14-15, 8-8) into a tie with the Warhawks for fifth place in the conference. UT Arlington sits just ahead at 9-8 in fourth place with one game remaining at Texas State on Friday.
Â
The final two games will have a significant impact on the tournament seeding as seven teams are currently between 9-7 and 7-9 with Georgia State being the current two seed and Georgia Southern—Saturday's opponent—just behind in the third spot.
Â
Continued strong play from Jordon Varnado would figure to help Troy's chances as the forward has scored 23 or more in two of his past three games. In his past six games, Varnado has four double-doubles highlighted by his 30-13 outing in the last road game at Appalachian State.
Â
Georgia State (20-9, 11-5) has hit a rough patch as the Panthers have lost three of the past four following an 89-81 loss to UT Arlington on Saturday. Troy earned a victory at Georgia State in the last trip to Atlanta as the Trojans pulled out an 80-77 victory on Jan. 9, 2017.
