TROY, Alabama – Troy baseball is set to play host to in-state rival UAB for a midweek matchup Wednesday night at Riddle-Pace Field; first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The first 100 fans in the gates will receive a Troy drawstring bag.
Â
The Trojans (4-4) were swept by No. 3 Florida State in a three-game set this past weekend and are returning home for 11 of the next 13 games.
Â
Senior shortstop Matt Sanders continued his tear at the plate, going 7-for-16 with yet another homer to increase his season total to four. He currently ranks eighth nationally in home runs and fourth in runs scored with 13.
Â
Coach Mark Smartt will send Rush Hixon (1-1, 6.43) to the mound for his third collegiate start. The last time Hixon was on mound at Riddle-Pace, he fanned five batters in five innings of work in the series finale against UT Martin.
Â
UAB (4-1) will jump back into the swing of baseball season, as its originally scheduled series with Arkansas State was cancelled due to inclement weather last week –  the squad will face Jacksonville State on Tuesday before hitting the road to Troy Wednesday. The Blazers are led offensively by Zack Davis, who is batting at a .400 clip with three doubles and three RBIs.
Â
In coordination with the game, Troy Athletics is hosting a Fraternity Cook-Off in Doubles Alley with coaches serving as judges before the games. The winner will be brought back later in the season to throw out the first pitch for a game.
Â
The game will also serve as Diamond Doll Appreciation Night as all current members of the team behind the baseball team will be honored before the game.
