Troy Baseball Sweeps Fall Exhibitions

TROY, Ala. – Troy baseball downed Alabama State Friday night in a 12-inning game, then swept Auburn-Montgomery in two seven-inning games on Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
The two fall exhibitions, a by-product of a new rule in the NCAA allowing teams to play against two other teams in the offseason, gave the team a chance to see competition outside of intrasquad games for the first time in several years.
Â
Troy 9, Alabama State 2
Friday night, a couple of guys that helped lead Troy to an NCAA Regional appearance led Troy to a 9-2 win over in-state foes Alabama State. Drew Frederic was 3-for-6 with a double and two stolen bases, and Rigsby Mosley drove home three runs on a homer and triple in the game.
Â
A new face also had a strong showing at the plate; freshman Logan Cerny reached base four times – twice on singles and twice on walks – and scored once.
Â
Cory Gill made his return to the mound, seeing live action baseball for the first time since the 2017 season after missing the 2018 campaign with injury. Gill worked four shutout innings and fanned five batters – allowing just four baserunners in the outing. Also working four innings was Levi Thomas, who struck out nine around three hits and no walks.
Â
Troy 6, AUM 1
Hunter Mercer's three hits with two runs scored paced a six-run effort by the Trojans in game one of their doubleheader against AUM.
Â
Mercer was responsible for two doubles in a parade of extra-base hits by Troy – also joining in on the fun were Tanner Jackson with a homer, Tyler Head with a triple and Manning Early and Austin Garofalo with doubles.
Â
Stout pitching performances from Sadler Goodwin and Zack Lightsey limited the Warhawk offense to just one run in the seven-inning game. Goodwin struck out four batters and allowed just three baserunners in three innings of work, while Lightsey fanned two in two innings of hitless baseball.
Â
Troy 2, AUM 0
Fans were treated to a pitchers' duel in the final game of the weekend, but Troy was able to hold on for a 2-0 win over AUM.
Â
Taylor Pridgen, Will Carnley, Lance Johnson and Rush Hixon combined to shutout the Warhawks – Pridgen earned the win after three innings of one-hit, two-strikeout work on the mound. Hixon entered in the seventh and threw seven pitches – all seven were strikes – to pick up the save.
Â
Both teams were able to muster only two hits, but the Trojans made the most of theirs to bring in two runs. Drew Frederic opened the scoring with a solo shot to the opposite field in the first inning; the other run scored on a Caleb Bartolero sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Â
Â
Troy will host its 5th Annual Costume Game Monday night, collecting canned goods to donate to the Salvation Army of Troy. Cost of admission is one canned good per person.
Â
The Trojans will wrap up their fall practices next week with the Fall World Series. Game times are set for 1 p.m. on Nov. 11; 6 p.m. on Nov. 13; and 6 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Riddle-Pace Field.
