Men’s Golf Starts Strong at East Bay Deli Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Dean Martin and Connor Futrell shot in the red to lead Troy in Sunday's opening round of the East Bay Deli Classic at the Turtle Point Golf Course at the Kiawah Island Resort. Troy is tied for third place in the 21-team field after shooting 1-over as a team and the Trojans are just four shots off the lead.
Martin carded six birdies in the opening round – the second most in the field – as he shot a 3-under 69 to sit tied for fifth after Sunday's play. He birdied his first two holes en route to a 34 on the front nine. Martin raced out to 5-under with three birdies over his first four holes after the turn before settling with a 35 on the back nine and a 69 overall.
Futrell made the turn at 2-under after birdies on the fifth and sixth and his card reached 3-under after a birdie on the par-5 13th. His lone bogey of the round came on the 18thand settled his card at 2-under which was good for a tie for ninth place.
No. 44 College of Charleston shot 3-under to take the team lead with Memphis two shots back in second, while Troy, USC Upstate and Jacksonville State are tied for third four back.
Brent Hamm turned in a solid back nine as he carded a 35 after the turn with a pair of birdies and just one bogey. Coupled with his front nine, Hamm finished 1-over for the day and tied for 20thplace. Jake Tiffin carded a pair of birdies and is tied for 56thplace at 5-over and Will McFadden is tied for 78thplace at 7-over.
Teams are playing foursomes and the Trojans will be paired with Presbyterian, Radford and Augusta for Monday's second round. The first grouping will hit the course at 7:20 a.m. (CT) off the first hole.
