TROY, Ala. – Troy sophomore Tyler Sumpter made Sun Belt Conference history becoming just the second player in league history to earn Player of the Week honors for the third consecutive week. The Sun Belt named him the Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday after tying his own school record in Troy's win over Texas State on Saturday.
Sumpter, a native of Hoover, Ala., scored all 12 of Troy's points in the win over Texas State with four field goals. The four makes tied the Troy single-game record which Sumpter tied two weeks ago against Louisiana after Greg Whibbs set the record originally in 2007.
He has now made 10 field goals over the past three games which establishes a new Troy Division I record. Sumpter is 17-of-22 on the season and is just three field goals shy of tying the Troy single-season record for field goals.
Additionally, Sumpter averaged 40.7 yards on his nine punt attempts in the game with three inside the 20-yard line and three that traveled 50-plus yards.
Sumpter joins Louisiana quarterback Jerry Babb as the only player in league history to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week honors in three straight weeks; Babb did so in 2006.
Troy travels to Appalachian State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. (CT) with the winner earning the right to host the inaugural Sun Belt Championship Game. The Trojans have won 13 straight Sun Belt games and are looking for their second undefeated Sun Belt season in school history.
