ATLANTA – Troy volleyball's 2018 campaign came to a close Thursday night with a three-set loss to No. 5 seed UTA in the opening round of the Sun Belt Volleyball Championships at GSU Sports Arena.
With a strong cardinal-clad contingent backing them, the Trojans (11-19) came out hot in the opening set – jumping out to a 17-12 lead around the midpoint of the set. UTA (16-11) came storming back and pulled away with a 25-23 win in the first.
The second set was much like the first and Troy took a 17-16 advantage. That advantage was short-lived as the Mavs reeled off nine consecutive points to win it 25-17, a rally that seemingly took the wind out of the Trojans' sails.
In the third, it was all orange and blue – UTA led from wire to wire, starting with a huge 7-0 lead at the beginning. The Trojans battled back within a point twice (23-22 and 24-23) but the Mavs fended off the rally and clinched the match with a 25-23 third set win.
All-Sun Belt second teamer Cheyenne Hayes did what she has done nearly all season for Troy; recording a game-high 16 kills and serving two aces in the match. Hayes' 441 kills in 2018 were the fifth most in a single season in program history – one kill shy of fourth.
Freshmen Lacey Jeffcoat and Amara Anderson finished their respective seasons strong; Jeffcoat led all players with 13 digs, while Anderson led both teams with 26 assists. Anderson finished her first year of collegiate volleyball with 1,216 assists which ranks as the seventh most in school history and the second most since Troy joined the Sun Belt Conference.
Troy's lone senior, Logan Page, ended her playing career with four kills and three total blocks in the match. Page wrapped up a three-year career that featured the third most block assists, fourth highest hitting percentage and fourth best blocks per set total in the school record book.
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Josh Lauer
"We really gave a great effort tonight. Congrats to UTA on a hard-fought match. I'm very proud of the grit and growth our team showed tonight and throughout the entire season. Our entire team is thankful for the leadership and example of what it means to a Trojan by Logan Page this season; she leaves a tremendously positive legacy for our team build on. Lastly, I want to thank all our fans and parents for their support this season. No doubt we are Building the Empire together!"
