Troy Polishes Up in Exhibition Win over West Florida
11/1/2018 9:01:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team knocked of the preseason rust with an 88-71 victory over West Florida on Thursday in Trojan Arena.
In typical Chanda Rigby fashion, the Trojans pushed the floor and applied pressure throughout the game punishing the Argonauts for 31 points off 28 turnovers. Last season, Troy forced 20-plus turnovers 18 times.
Troy built up double digit leads several times, but West Florida, on the back of Toni Brewer's game-best 33 points, continued to fight back into the contest. The Argonauts took a 33-32 lead with 5:21 remaining in the second quarter just to watch the Trojans finish the half on 12-2 run.
The fourth quarter belonged to the home team as Troy led by as many as 21. Three Trojans finished in double figures with Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Teamer Sky'Lynn Holmes leading the way with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Senior forward Amahni Upshaw looked phenomenal in the paint hauling in a game-high 15 rebounds.
QUOTABLE
"It's not how we wanted to look," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "It looked like an exhibition, everyone wanted to show what they could do and maybe tried to do too much. Our system doesn't work if you don't dominate on the boards and I don't think we did that tonight."
UP NEXT
Troy opens the regular season at Florida State on Tuesday in Tallahassee. The Trojans are 2-2 all-time against the Seminoles with the last meeting taking place in 2003.
NOTEWORTHY
• Troy starters were: Amahni Upshaw, Sky'Lynn Holmes, Kayla Robinson, Jasmine Robinson and Jasmine LeBlanc
• Tyra Johnson and Harriet Winchester each hauled lengthy Troy scoring draughts with 3-pointers. Each player finished with a pair of treys in the game.
• Last year's NCAA leaders in offensive rebounds, the Trojans had just three in the first half, but improved to chalk up 19 in the second half.
