TROY, Ala. – Troy volleyball was downed in straight sets by rival South Alabama in mid-week, Sun Belt action in Trojan Arena Wednesday.
A buzzing crowd of over 1200 fans was treated to a couple of intense sets in the Halloween Night matchup, but the Jags (12-14, 6-7) pulled away with a three-set victory over the Trojans (10-16, 4-9) in the end.
The opening set was a wild one with the two in-state rivals tying six times with two lead changes in the frame – South Alabama faced match point at 23-24 but battled back to secure a 28-26 win.
Things were just as intense in the following set, but a late rally helped propel the Jags once again – this time to a 25-20 victory. The Trojans let the final set slip away early and were never able to regain the momentum, falling 14-25 to drop the match.
Sophomore Cheyenne Hayes gave Trojan Nation at least 17 things to cheer about, as she tallied 16 kills and recorded a solo block in the match – it marked her 21st double-digit kill outing of the season.
Amara Anderson had a huge game setting the ball, posting 38 assists – the fifth most in a single three-set match by any player in the conference this season. Now with 1057 assists this season, Anderson is now just 72 shy of the school's all-time freshman assists record.
On the defensive side of things, SaraGrace Wilson was the only Troy player to dip into double-figure in the digs category, and Belle Waldrop and Logan Page recorded a pair of blocks apiece.
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Josh Lauer
"I thought Chey (Hayes) was great tonight, she brought great energy and kept us in it. Plus, SaraGrace Wilson did a good job on the back row so there were definitely some bright spots. We weren't able to hold on to the momentum in the first set, but we're still learning to deal with those little setbacks better. We had a great crowd tonight; I loved the environment that our fans created. You can't underestimate the power that our student body has to give us an edge here on our own court."
