KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Troy fired 12 birdies in Sunday's opening round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point Golf Course. The Trojans are tied for sixth place overall in the 18-team field while Sarah Harrison and Nicole Lorup are tied for 11that 1-over.
Lorup carded a field-best five birdies in her opening round and tied for the best with a 3-under on the par 5 holes. Harrison made her move on the par 4s as she shot 1-under on the day.
Troy shot 11-over as a team and sits just six shots behind Kansas for second place – No. 35 College of Charleston leads at 4-under. The Trojans are just two shots back of No. 23 Campbell and lead No. 47 Charlotte by four strokes.
Lorup made the turn at 1-under after back-to-back birdies on the 12thand 13thholes. She remained at 1-under until taking a quad-bogey on the par-4 third pushed her card to 3-over. The freshman showed the poise of a veteran with two birdies and four pars over her final six holes to get back to 1-over.
Harrison finished her opening round with three birdies and was consistent on both sides of the turn with a 37-36 split. The Trojan senior played a solid round with just three holes above par.
Bianca Lohbauer added a pair of birdies and carded a 36 after the turn to shoot 4-over on the day and sit in a tie for 36thplace. Playing in the lineup for the first time this season, freshman Anna Claire Little carded a pair of birdies en route to a 5-over day and a tie for 46th. Lindsey Harrison sits tied for 73rdafter shooting an 82 on Sunday.
Play continues on Tuesday with the second of three rounds. Troy is paired with Wichita State and Elon and the first grouping is scheduled to take the course at 9:19 a.m.
