TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's golf team returns to the state of Louisiana for the second straight week for the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate hosted by Louisiana Tech at Squire Creek on Monday and Tuesday.
The Trojans turned in a ninth-place finish in the 13-team field at the David Toms Intercollegiate a week ago hosted by LSU. After struggling through the opening two rounds, Troy built some momentum with the third-best round of the day to close out play.
"I hope we can build off a strong finish at LSU last week," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We had a very heartfelt meeting after day one down there and some of the guys were frustrated with how they were playing. I challenged those guys to come out with a little more intensity and they responded. We're going in the right direction and there are some similarities in the two courses so hopefully we can take some of that momentum and really build on it."
Sophomore Connor Futrell leads Troy following two events this season with a 72.17 stroke average and 0.67 score vs. par. A lot of his success can be traced to his opening round where he is 4-under on the year.
Barnes will turn to Jake Tiffin, Dean Marin, Ike Alexander and Will McFadden to fill out the rest his lineup while Brent Hamm will make his collegiate debut as an individual.
Tiffin enters the third event of the season with a 73.33 stroke average and a team-leading two rounds under par, while Martin and Alexander will be playing for the second time on the young season. Alexander turned in Troy's second-best round at LSU, while Martin opened with a 1-over 36-hole start in the season opener.
"We've looked good in practice this week and have had some really good scores in our qualifying rounds," Barnes said. "I want to see these young guys bring some intensity and focus to the first parts off rounds – getting off to good starts. We can't afford to spot teams 10 shots in the first round and expect to make that up."
The Field
Louisiana Tech, Georgia, UAB, Cincinnati, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss, Troy, Nicholls State, Central Arkansas, Abilene Christian, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, New Orleans, Southeastern Louisiana, Oklahoma City
T-Time
Teams will play in foursomes for Monday's 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Troy will play along with Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and Nicholls State in both on Monday's rounds.
